Hither and Yon View Feedback Email hitherandyon This listing is for the pictured Stone Sakyamuni Buddha statue handcarved in Nepal View All Items View Auctions Only View Store Items This listing is for this excellent hard grey stone Buddha carving from the himalayas. It is of the Budddha Shakyamuni, sage of the Shakya clan, shown in the bhumisparsa mudra or earth-touching pose, commemorating Gautama Buddha's moment of enlightenment under the Bo tree in Bohdgaya, India. On the backside of the carving is an ornate dragon, and below that the protection prayer mantra, "Om Mani Padme Hum". ...The Buddha measures approximately 8 7/8" high x 5 1/2" wide and weighs 4 lbs 7 oz. There are some cracks visible on this carving...on the very top of the Buddha, and on the knee. They are not large, nor do they appear to be in any danger of causing the Buddha to break. I have tried to take photos below that show these areas well - I do not beleive that they detract from the appearence of the Buddha, rather they seem to add to it. This is a very unique statue, just beautiful. The bhumisparsa mudra is the gesture of witness, also known as the "touching the earth" posture. This pose is commemorative of Gautama Buddha's moment of enlightenment under the Bo tree in Bhodgaya India. It symbolizes the Buddha's unshakeable faith and resolution; armed with his resolve to remain seated under the Bodhi tree until he had solved the problem of the cessation of suffering, he took the earth as testimony of the merits that he had accumulated during his previous births. Temptation, personified by the demon Mara, came at him in many forms, but he resisted them all & touched the earth to call it to witness his victory. This was the Buddha's final obstacle on his path to enlightenment, and thus the mudra is also referred to as "the attitude of subduing Mara". Carved into the backside of the statue is the Tibetan prayer mantra, "Om Mani Padme Hum". This is the Mantra of Avalokiteshvara and is often invoked as a protection prayer from danger. Writing, carving, or viewing the written form of the prayer will also benefit one's karma, invoking the benevolent blessings of Chenrezig (Tibetan) or Avalokiteshvara (Sanskrit), the embodiment of compassion. It is said that one who recites this sacred mantra will be saved from all dangers. When Buddhism first came to Tibet it blended with a prevalent religion at the time, the Bon beliefs. The dragon was a common symbol and is carved into the statues ornate robes. The wax export seal has been left on this Buddha. Shipping within the U.S. is $8.95by priority mail with optional insurance for $4.30, and we combine shipping charges for multiple auction wins. International bidders are welcome, please inquire with your location for rate options and insurance options... Aloha!
