About the Artist Over the years, award winning ceramic artist Geraldine Powell has worked with various forms of clay art: mosaics, hand-made tile, art glazed pottery, sculpture and others. About 10 years ago she saw several pieces of pottery that had colors intricately swirled together. It was called agateware after the agate stone it so resembled. She fell in love. The potter who made it explained that it was the most difficult and labor intensive pottery to make. It did not matter. She was hooked. She has worked almost exclusively with agateware ever since. In this type of pottery a base clay, generally white, is stained with various other colors. Then several colors are wedged or fused together before the piece is thrown. The pattern which finally emerges in the finished piece depends on many factors, such as how saturated the clay is with color, how the different colored clays are wedged, and how fast the piece is thrown or how many wheelhead direction changes are made as the piece is shaped. Unlike most pottery, the glaze is clear, and can be matte, satin or glossy. All of the color is in the clay itself. She focuses on bringing a sense of movement and fluidity to her work. While she firmly controls the major design elements of a piece, she allows serendipity to rule the details. This marriage of control and chance insures that every piece is unique, never to be duplicated. Geraldine pushs the limits of her material, always striving to improve her work. She has developed many new techniques for creating stunning fused color patterns. She is now one of the premier ceramic artists working with agateware pottery. Her work appeals to the serious ceramic collector who understands the sophisticated techniques and artistic value of each piece. It also attracts the novice who is acquiring their first piece of fine pottery simply because of the exuberance of the color and pattern. Of course, each piece is signed, dated and numbered. Geraldine is a co-owner of The Orchid Gallery at 111 Frazier Ave. in Chattanooga, TN.About the urns:In the words of the artist:"Over the years I’ve made a few urns every year for people by special request. Since we opened our brick and mortar gallery two years ago, I have kept several on the shelves regularly. I am now offering them online. Agateware pottery is created by mixing stains or oxides with clay before the pots are thrown. The goal is to create a sense of fluidity and movement within the clay body of a piece that complements and enhances the shape and function. I hope by offering unique colors, patterns, and shapes you can find an urn which truly memorializes the life and personality of the spirit that it contains. Each urn is fully glazed inside and out. A plastic bag is not needed. The lids have a ‘U’ groove which fits over the lip of the urn and can be permanently sealed with an acrylic or silicone cement." Email: theorchidgallery@aol.com
