This book is about four siblings. They are Henry, Jessie, Violet and baby, Benny. Their parents have died. The orphans hear their Grandfather who is now their guardian was mean to their mother. The brothers and sisters decide not to live with him.The orphans escape the Grandfather. They find themselves at a bakery and later in the woods. There in the woods, the foursome find a boxcar. The lowly boxcar becomes a home to the orphans. The resourceful children find a dump. In the dump, they find dishes, cups and silverware. The oldest, Henry becomes a handyman for Dr. Moore.Gertrude Chandler Warner weaves a story of suspense which draws young readers into the story. Ms. Warner is a benevolent spider who spins a web about the readers. The story is so fulfilling, that once the readers finish the story, they are willing to reenter the web time and time again. The books are a treasure chest of adventure and mystery.Surprise Island #2 is by Gertrude Chandler Warner. It is the second book in The Boxcar Children Series popular with young children (ages:6-8).
