Description
Very Scarce Genealogy:  A New Copy Shipped in its Original Box! The Allen Family: Descendants of John and Amy Cox Allen with Allied Lines. By Lester M. Allen Salisbury, N.C.:  Salisbury Printing Company, Inc., 1987. ******************** Quarto.  524 pages.  Hardcover bound in gray cloth with titles in black.  A fresh, clean, unopened copy.  The pictures shown are of a copy we just pulled out of a new box, but we have another one that is unopened.  We can send you either one you wish. This is a scarce genealogy of an extensive family.  The Allens came from Ireland to America in the early 18th century.  They first settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania (Township of London Grove) in 1712/13.  His son, also John Allen, moved to the Piedmont area of North Carolina in the mid-18th century, which at that time was still semi-wilderness but becoming fastly settled.  The Allens were Quakers, and the son J. A. bought some land in Snow Camp in what was then Orange County, N.C.  The Allens propogated throughout North Carolina, settling in the areas that would become Alamance, Chatham, Guilford, Randolph, Surry, Yadkin, and Rowan Counties before the end of the century. From these places, the Allens moved out to all parts of the country, especially South Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Kansas, Kentucky, Iowa and Indiana. Still much of the focus is on the Allens of North Carolina.  The volume contains not just the requisite genealogical listings but also a surprising amount of narrative text:  stories of some of the early patriarchs and matriarchs of the line.  They seemed to be especially active in the areas of Randolph Co., as well as Alamance, Orange, and Guilford Counties (including the New Garden Friends Meeting near present-day Guilford College in Greensboro). Amy Allen, (b. Chester Co., Pa. 1743) married Herman Husband, the Quaker who was active in the North Carolina War of the Regulators against the Royal Governor Tryon in advance of the Revolutionary War.  He was apparently a participant in the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. The book is illustrated with several photographs and reproductions of old maps, handwritten deeds, etc.  It's a fantastic compilation of genealogical information! ******************************* Please note that some of our photos make the interior pages of books appear a bit browned or tanned.  This is a function of our camera and is not generally the case in the book unless noted in our descriptions. ************************* Thank you for checking out our auction!  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.  Be sure to check out our other auctions as well.  This week we will be listing a number of old leatherbound books, as well as some rare and unusual Americana, some travel books, and a few old, beautiful, and decorative Christmas volumes.
