A favorite of Art Nouveau jewelers, Moonstone is a highly prized gift for lovers as it is believed to arouse tender passion. A true gem of antiquity, Moonstone is surrounded by folklore regarding its origins. Moonstone was once believed to be a magical solidification of actual moonlight. Hindu Astrology believes Moonstone to be a secondary gem of Cancer and is considered sacred to those born on Monday (Moon Day). Moonstone was very popular with the Romans, who thought it was formed out of moonlight. The Greeks believed the stone was ruled by the Goddess Selene calling it Aphroselene. In India moonstone is considered a sacred stone. Moonstone is often given to young lovers in India to help them understand what their lives will be like together. Moonstone is often called the visionary's stone. It helps in seeing things more clearly. Moonstone is useful for foretelling the future during the full or waning of the moon. Typically, the stone is placed in the mouth before bed. The answer is said to come in dreams during the night. In antiquity, men used Moonstone to predict the future by placing them in their mouths during the full moon. Moonstone is the traditional gift for the 13th Wedding Anniversary. Moonstone is thought to subdue an overactive 3rd Chakra and open a closed 6th Chakra (3rd Eye). It is believed that wearing amulets made of moonstone will provide protection from epilepsy. Hung from fruit trees, moonstone was believed to assure a bountiful fruit crop. It was also believed to assist all vegetation. Moonstone was once called the traveler's stone because it was believed to protect traders and merchants from perils at sea. Healing Properties Moonstone aligns vertebrae. It is a good digestive aid and useful for kidney problems. A feminine stone, it is said to have calming properties. Moonstone helps the wearer mentally. It also assists in taking decisions. Moonstone is beneficial for relationships. Wearing or carrying a moonstone is believed to bring a new love into your life. Also, holding a piece of moonstone over their hearts after a quarrel, and then exchanging the stones with each other, would bring you back together. Moonstone helps with stress by calming the mind and soothing the spirit. It is so effective that gem therapists and ayurvedic doctors use a purified form of it (called godanti) to cure anxiety and strengthen the will. In India, Moonstone is believed to possess sacred properties including the ability to control temperament, erratic behavior, insomnia and marital problems. It is also believed to accentuate the wearer's nature, whether positive or negative. A symbol of the Third Eye, Moonstone was once believed to balance yin/yang, protect against epilepsy and sunstroke, cure headaches and nosebleeds, and ensure a high yield in crops. Today, crystal healers believe that it can help men open their feminine emotional aspects. Scientific Properties Moonstone possesses an unusual sheen. Its color ranges from virtually colorless to milky white to gray, brown, blue, yellow, green, rainbow or pink. One can see a floating white or blue light within the stone's body, an optical effect known as adularescence or Schiller. The cause for Moonstone's characteristic shimmer or sheen is the intergrowth of two different types of feldspar with different refractive indexes. The smooth-domed cabochon cut of this stone maximizes this effect. In jewelry making, the stone’s setting should be minimal to maximize the light reflection through its opal-like milky depths. This is the reason for the popularity of moonstone rings and earrings, the movement of the wearer causes the adularescent effect to be more pronounced. Moonstone is the most valuable member of feldspar family (hardness 6-6.5 on the Moh's scale). It is closely related to sunstone. The name Feldspar comes from the German “Feldt Spat”, meaning “Field Stone”. This is because when Feldspar weathers, it releases large amounts of plant nutrients, such as potassium, which enrich the soil. Moonstone is found in Sri Lanka, Burma, Central and Southern India, as well as in Virginia and Pennsylvania. Buyer Beware! This stone can be confused with selenite gypsum that is very soft and easily scratched with a fingernail while Moonstone's hardness rating makes it relatively hard as compared to that of a steel file.
