Wheelbase: 139"Many consider the Super Eights produced between 1935 and 1939, to be the finest automobiles ever produced by the Packard Motor Car Company. Certainly it is true that the Senior cars represented the end of an era; never again would Packard offer the exceptional quality of a hand built senior car.For 1935 Packard introduced several changes, including more horsepower and major improvements in suspension and steering, which made the vehicle much easier and more comfortable to drive. All new bodies, introduced for the '35 model year, offered true envelope styling. For the first time the car was designed as a whole, with body, hood, fenders and running boards integrated into a smoothly-executed design regarded as one of the most attractive bodies of the era.The fourteenth series for 1936 was largely carried over from the previous year, but the slight differences remain important to collectors today -- the most significant of these being a new radiator, which was raked back five degrees to give the car a much sleeker look. 1936 also marked the last year for 17-inch wire wheels and the traditional double blade bumpers with hydraulic dampers. Perhaps even more important is that the fourteenth series market the end of the line for the big displacement Super Eight engine, a power plant that is widely regarded as Packard's finest. The car presented here is one of the rarest known body styles from the era. An original five-passenger phaeton, it comes complete with its unrestored original firewall plate and is one of just a handful of examples of its kind known to survive. Most collectors today acknowledge that '35 and '36 phaetons are the most beautiful, surpassing even the remarkable eleventh series 1934 phaetons. That so few survive makes this occasion truly noteworthy. The example offered here is one of just five or six known to survive. It was sold new to Robert Woodward, an artist from Greenfield, Massachusetts, delivered on August 3rd, 1936. He would own the car until his death in 1957, at which point Roderic Blood acquired the car from the Woodward estate. Blood was a true enthusiast, and used the car as his fair weather daily driver until 1966. In 1967, the car was sold to Mr. Sawyer of Gloversville, New York who kept it a short while before selling it to Mr. Austin of Gouverneur, New York. The car remained in his possession until 1982 when it was purchased by collector Manny Souza, who sold it to Jason Siegel, a past president of the Florida region of the Classic Car Club of America in June of 1988. Siegel drove the car until 1990, when he decided to embark upon a total, ground up restoration. He commissioned the late Jack Dietz, a highly respected classic car restorer to do the work, which required more than two years to complete. Upon completion, he showed the car, eventually earning both AACA National First Place and CCCA Senior awards, the former in 1996.Today, this lovely Packard remains in high point condition. The body, fenders, and other sheet metal are original to the car and in excellent condition. The trim and upholstery are in near new condition, as is the top. The engine and chassis were restored by noted Packard authority Jack Dietz and today the cars runs extremely well. The engine is well detailed with a polished cylinder head. The chassis shows normal indications of occasional road usage but retains its detailed appearance. The paint is superb throughout as is the chrome plating. The car is well-equipped, fitted with not only the expected side curtains and top boot, but also optional windwings, correct Packard spot lamp, the original Packard heater, dual sidemounts with metal covers, and a proper Packard Goddess of Speed hood ornament.Collectors today are increasingly interested in assessing the provenance of classic-era cars. This lovely Packard boasts a well known history from new, an unbroken chain of ownership, as well as its original data tag. It is both well known and highly respected in Packard circles, and offers a highly appealing combination of beauty, rarity, and outstanding provenance.Auction House RM Auctions5 West Forest AveYpsilanti, MI United States 48197519.352.4575Important NoticeRM Auctions usually auctions automobiles at the rate of 20 lots per hour. On some occasions, eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. RM recommends placing a realistic absentee bid now, as insurance to help avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also re-open a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because of a missed audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that RM Auctions may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above, or under any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tying eBay live bids. Also please note that all RM Auctions lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 13% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
