Wheelbase: 140"Beginning in 1927 with the creation of Harley Earl's Art and Color department, Cadillac underwent an amazing transformation and a 15-year program of styling and engineering leadership that would launch the marque to the top of the fine car market. With the introduction of its breathtaking sixteen-cylinder models in 1930, many of Cadillac's competitors scrambled to keep up. Pierce-Arrow introduced its V12 in 1932, Marmon a V16 in late 1931, and Auburn a V12 in 1932.Rather than rest on its laurels, Cadillac delivered another blow to the competition in 1931 with the introduction of a V12 that shared most of the luxury features of the V16 but at a much lower price. Although not one casting was shared, the V12 was an exact replica of the V16; with four less cylinders it was an engineering tour de force, incorporating numerous unique features.Longer and lower, the 1932 models in particular benefitted from various stylistic and technical changes and improvements. 1932 proved to be the final year of classic Cadillac styling and the swan song of the tombstone radiators and clamshell fenders. Flanked by beautiful bullet-shaped headlamps and highlighted by a distinctive "V" emblem (designating either eight-, twelve- or sixteen-cylinder engines), the radiators for 1932 carried the first true grilles, devoid of radiator shutters or screens. The running boards were curved to blend seamlessly into the front and rear fenders.Technically, these Cadillacs also benefited from a vacuum-operated automatic clutch and free-wheeling, two-way hydraulic shock absorbers that could be controlled from the driver's seat, and a synchromesh transmission that used silent helical gears in all three forward speeds. Additionally, the cars benefitted from improved reliability with the adoption of mechanical fuel pumps and Detroit Lubricator carburetors.Ultimately, however, the styling of the eight- and twelve-cylinder cars was virtually identical and the best way to distinguish the two was by the radiator badge or hubcap insert. Although not dramatic, these stylistic changes produced what many observers feel is the best looking Cadillac of the classic era and undoubtedly one of the most desirable.Of the numerous body styles available, surely one of the sportiest was the Fisher-bodied Dual Cowl Sport Phaeton, which rode a 140-inch wheelbase and was offered at a factory price of $3,945.The V12 example offered here was restored in the 1990s and remains in excellent condition throughout. A Classic Car Club of America Senior car, it received a score of 98 points and was periodically freshened as needed. A particularly desirable Dual Cowl Sport Phaeton example, it benefits from a copy of its original build sheet and a host of desirable features including wind wings, dual side-mounted spare tires with tire-mounted side-view mirrors, wide whitewall tires, dual driving lights, and even a radio, surely one of the earliest such applications.Although exact production numbers are not available, this car is body number 9 of perhaps only 13 total examples built. It is unlikely that more than a handful of these stunning Dual Cowl Sport Phaetons remain in existence and consequently the opportunity to purchase an original Fisher-bodied car of this quality is exceedingly rare and may, in fact, represent a once in a lifetime opportunity.Auction House RM Auctions5 West Forest AveYpsilanti, MI United States 48197519.352.4575Important NoticeRM Auctions usually auctions automobiles at the rate of 20 lots per hour. On some occasions, eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. RM recommends placing a realistic absentee bid now, as insurance to help avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also re-open a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because of a missed audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that RM Auctions may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above, or under any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tying eBay live bids.
