Description
24x28" ALPACA MASTANA MANTA MESA WRAP Q'ero Kero, PeruThe mastana is a special type of manta cloth used by Andean ritual specialists or shamans to wrap up collections of sacred objects called mesas. Like other types of manta, it is woven on a loom. Mastanas are made in two parts which are knit or stitched together. The two halves represent opposing pairs such as right / left, male / female, which in Andean thought are considered complimentary and ideally in balance and harmony. The designs of the mastana halves are similar but never identical or entirely symmetrical. When the mesa is opened, the mastana serves as an altar cloth.Mastana composition varies from village to village throughout the Andes. This mastana is from Q'ero (Kero), a remote Andean village that is believed to retain Incan beliefs and practices in a purer state than other villages. It measures about 24 x 28 in. (61 x 71 cm). It was hand-woven from hand-spun alpaca yarn dyed with natural, plant- and insect-based pigments. The centerline is stitched in yarn. The pattern (pallay) is done with a difficult three-color complementary-warp weave that results in the pattern showing on the back, but in opposite colors. It is a characteristically Q'ero pallay called chuncho that represents an Amazonian native with a tall feather headdress. This mastana is new, direct from Q'ero via Cusco, Peru.
