Wheelbase: 148"At the New York Auto Show, Cadillac stunned the fine car market with the introduction of its breathtaking sixteen cylinder models. The Astor Hotel was elbowroom only on January 4th, 1930 when a crowd of some 20,000 jostled to catch a glimpse of the new "Supercar". Instantly, Cadillac was catapulted to the head of the luxury class. Until then, only Bugatti had produced a "U"-shaped sixteen cylinder engine -- which had been made for aircraft production in 1915 by bolting two eight cylinder engines together.Cadillac's V16 was the first true 16 cylinder engine built from scratch. Designed by Owen Nacker, it was an engineering tour de force. Its 45-degree cylinder bank angle and overhead valve design kept the engine narrow, while the external manifold allowed good access to the engine compartment. Cadillac's V16 was the first engine ever to be "styled", with all the wiring hidden and plenty of gleaming polished aluminum, shining porcelain, and a pair of beautiful valve covers with brushed aluminum ridged surfaces featuring the Cadillac emblem. In the face of a declining luxury market, Cadillac managed to survive, thanks in large part to the financial support of General Motors. Without this support, Cadillac could never have produced such a low production, luxurious automobile. Although the cars were brilliantly designed, the Depression-era market meant that the V16 was produced in tiny numbers for those few who were capable of paying more than ten times the cost of a convertible Chevrolet. The few that remain offer us a glimpse into one of the most exciting automotive eras of all time.Of these rare cars, the open two-seater style V16 cars on the massive 148-inch wheelbase are some of the most sought-after today. They are considered to be the ultimate in luxury car motoring. All three open styles had rumble seats for two more passengers in the rear. The least expensive was the roadster style 4302 at $5,350 while the most expensive was the convertible coupe style 4235 at $6,900. This convertible coupe, style 4335, priced between the 4302 and the 4235 at $5,900, was unusual for four reasons. First, the car was built in the Fleetwood, Pennsylvania factory before Fleetwood was moved to Detroit in December 1930 and therefore was a truly coachbuilt car. Second, the car sports a unique split vee swing-out windshield with a seven-degree rake which provided significantly more interior room and preceded the Dietrich-designed Packard split vee windshields by almost two full years. Third, like the Dietrich convertible coupe Packards, this car has suicide doors hinged at the rear. And finally, it is the only convertible coupe with the unique "Le Baron"-style curved hood. These cars, of which only 100 were originally produced, have aptly become known as the "Pennsylvania" windshield Cadillacs.Today, there is thought to be less than 12 original cars remaining of this style according to the Cadillac Database, and even fewer are matching number cars such as this rare and beautiful example. This stunning 1930 two-tone red piece of rolling art wears body number 47. All accessible trim pieces and body stamping that should bear this number have the corresponding identification mark. The car's close-coupled lines are well complemented by the more formal straight sill, a feature that made the body appear even more impressive. Unlike the less expensive roadster, the convertible coupe provided the added benefit of full weather protection. The car proudly sports 13-inch diameter main headlights that are in scale with this massive but elegant beauty. It also has eight-inch lower Pilot-Ray driving lights that turn with the front wheels, chrome fender lights and dual side mounted 19-inch wire wheels that set off the car dramatically. The Fleetwood-bodied example we have the pleasure of offering here also has a new correct interior, new convertible top and new Connolly carpets. There is little doubt that the V16 Cadillac is one of the ultimate cars of the era. Unlike many, the originality of the example offered here is undisputed and confirmed by the original factory build sheet. The rarity of the convertible coupe with its "Pennsylvania" windshield body style, "Le Baron" hood and suicide doors, makes this one of the most attractive sixteen cylinder Cadillacs in existence and one of the most likely to appreciate in value over time.Auction House RM Auctions5 West Forest AveYpsilanti, MI United States 48197519.352.4575Important NoticeRM Auctions usually auctions automobiles at the rate of 20 lots per hour. On some occasions, eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. RM recommends placing a realistic absentee bid now, as insurance to help avoid disappointment.
