L-head inline eight-cylinder engine, three-speed transmission, independent front suspension, live rear axle, and four-wheel hydraulic brakes. Wheelbase 127"With the demise of Packard's Twelve in 1939, the 180 became the company's new top of the line car. Making their debut in New York in October 1941, the 1942 180 models -- and the companion 160 series -- featured revised looks in front, with headlights integrated into the fenders for the first time. On the inside, interior trim was on the cutting edge of technology -- it featured a dash fascia molded almost entirely in plastic, well ahead of many competitors and undoubtedly an anomaly for the period. In several ways, 1942 marked the curtain call for Packard's senior cars. The company sold its tooling to the Russians after the war, which left it with only the mid-priced Clipper to offer customers during the postwar boom. Similarly, the coachbuilt era was drawing to a close. Most of the great names in coachbuilding had ceased to exist by the late thirties. One of the few exceptions was the legendary Howard "Dutch" Darrin. Many feel that it was his experience with Hibbard and Darrin in Paris that gave his designs a European flair. In the late thirties, Darrin relocated to California, opening a shop in Hollywood, where his popular designs catered to the stars. In 1938 he began building a series of special Convertible Victorias on Packard chassis. These striking cars had long hoods, pretty vee windshields, and the famous "Darrin dip" in the beltline at the rear of the doors. The design was so popular that Packard agreed to market the cars, later setting up production in Connersville, Indiana. It is these later cars that many collectors today value most highly. Their combination of stylish trim, more sophisticated engineering, and improved structural rigidity makes them very popular in today's market. Priced at $4,595, they were quite expensive, but their style and exclusivity helped Packard sell every one.About 50 of Darrin's Convertible Victorias were produced and just 15 examples were assembled for 1942, before civilian automobile production was cut short by America's entry into World War II. This particular example was used in the filming of the 1970s television detective series Banacek, starring George Peppard, as related by its current owner who also owned the other Darrin-bodied Packard used in the show. It was eventually restored by noted Packard collector Ralph Marano in the 1990s and reportedly remains in outstanding condition throughout. Marano drove the car periodically before it was sold to its current owner. Most importantly, this car is the only such Darrin Convertible Victoria to feature a three-position convertible top. That is to say, the top can either be closed, completely open, or partially open over the front compartment while covering the rear occupants. The rear window can also be removed and although the partially-open position requires the installation of two interior landau bars, it is undeniably attractive and complements the Packard's styling beautifully. While Darrin-bodied Packard 180 Convertible Victorias are few and far between, this example benefits from added rarity, Hollywood provenance, and, as it has been lovingly cared for in climate-controlled storage by its current owners, remains in superb condition. This is truly an excellent example of typical Dutch Darrin innovation.Auction House RM Auctions5 West Forest AveYpsilanti, MI United States 48197519.352.4575Important NoticeRM Auctions usually auctions automobiles at the rate of 20 lots per hour. On some occasions, eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. RM recommends placing a realistic absentee bid now, as insurance to help avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also re-open a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because of a missed audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that RM Auctions may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above, or under any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tying eBay live bids.
